A national organisation for parents and carers

The National Parents Alliance is an ambitious new civic movement and membership organisation, bringing parents and carers together to become better informed, better connected, more involved and more influential.

We're building a trusted national community and platform through which parents and carers can find support, services and information, navigate complex systems, connect with other parents, contribute their knowledge and experience, and have greater influence on the policies and services that shape their children's lives and futures.

How NPA works: parents and carers connect and participate, build evidence, represent and advocate, and gain greater influence.

How NPA works

From individual experience to collective influence.

  1. Parents & carers: experience, knowledge and ideas.
  2. Connect & participate: share, learn and contribute.
  3. Build evidence: identify patterns and understand what matters.
  4. Represent & advocate: turn evidence into representation and advocacy.
  5. Greater influence: help shape the decisions that affect children and families.

For you and your family: information — trusted guidance; support — practical help; navigation — find the right route; connection — people and community.

Improving our children’s futures by empowering and connecting parents and carers.

Why NPA?

Families spending time together in a park

Parents and carers carry an extraordinary responsibility: raising the next generation.

Yet the world surrounding children and families has become increasingly complex.

Parents navigate schools, colleges and universities; health and mental health services; childcare and SEND; local and national government; qualifications and exams; careers and apprenticeships; charities, specialists, regulators and countless other organisations.

There is an enormous amount of knowledge, expertise and support available.

But it is fragmented.

Knowing where to start, what information to trust, who can help or where to turn next can be difficult and time-consuming — particularly when something has gone wrong.

And the fragmentation goes much further than information and support.

Parents are surveyed and consulted. They give feedback, join PTAs and governing bodies, participate in forums and community groups, establish campaigns and charities, and share their experiences in countless different places.

Millions of parents and carers accumulate enormous knowledge and lived experience simply through raising their families.

But much of that knowledge remains dispersed across individual families, organisations and systems.

Parents and carers need a better way to connect, navigate and influence.

NPA is being created to help provide it.

Support. Connect. Empower.

Support

Sometimes you know exactly what you need.

Sometimes you don't even know where to start.

NPA aims to become a trusted first port of call for parents and carers — helping families find reliable information, understand their options and reach the organisations, services and expertise best placed to help.

As NPA grows, we intend to develop practical resources, navigation tools and member services that can save parents time, stress and unnecessary cost — and provide more direct support and advocacy where appropriate.

The right information. The right support. A clearer next step.

Connect

Parents shouldn't have to navigate everything alone.

Across the UK there are extraordinary parent communities, charities, campaigns, voluntary organisations, specialists, professionals and sources of expertise.

NPA doesn't need to replace them.

We want to connect them.

We'll build a national community through which parents and carers can find one another, share experience, discover organisations and expertise, participate in issues that matter to them and contribute their own knowledge and skills.

Because an Alliance should make what already exists easier to find, easier to access and stronger when connected.

Empower

This is about more than being heard.

Parents and carers need the information, confidence, connections and opportunities to participate and influence.

NPA will create ways for parents to contribute their experiences, ideas and expertise; participate in research and campaigns; identify problems and possible solutions; and help shape the issues NPA takes forward.

Through research, representation and advocacy, we'll work to ensure the experiences, interests and priorities of parents and families are better understood and more effectively heard by those with the power to make change.

Individual experience. Collective evidence. Greater influence.

When one family encounters a problem, we can help them navigate it. When many families encounter the same problem, we can help change it.

By listening to and supporting parents and carers, NPA can identify recurring problems that might otherwise remain hidden across individual families, schools, services and communities.

We can turn those experiences into evidence — and, where change is needed, use that evidence to inform our representation and advocacy.

Support when you need it. A community to belong to. Influence where it matters.

NPA is being built as a membership organisation that provides practical value to parents and families, as well as a national platform for their collective participation and influence.

Planned services — in development

These services are not available yet. We will explain the scope and access arrangements as each develops.

A trusted parent helpline

Somewhere to start when you have a question, encounter a problem or simply don't know where to turn.

A national parent directory

Making it easier to find relevant information, organisations, services, specialists and support without spending hours searching.

Practical information, guides and resources

Clear, accessible information to help parents understand their options and navigate the issues families encounter.

Expert briefings, events and conversations

Opportunities to hear from and question people with knowledge and expertise across the issues affecting children and families.

Advocacy and specialist support

Helping members understand their options, communicate effectively with organisations and, where appropriate, access more direct advocacy and specialist assistance.

Family legal support and protection — in development

We are exploring legal support and insurance services designed to give NPA members access to advice and assistance when eligible problems or disputes arise.

Opportunities to participate and influence

Surveys, research, consultations, working groups and other ways for parents and carers to contribute their experience and help shape NPA's priorities.

And this is only the beginning.

We want to build the membership organisation parents and carers tell us they need.

A Different Starting Point

A parent and child tending plants together

Children are educated by schools, treated by health professionals and supported by many different services and organisations.

But they are raised by families.

Too often, systems look at children through the particular institution or service responsible for one part of their lives.

Parents and carers see something different.

They see the whole child.

They carry knowledge of their child's history, personality, needs, strengths, difficulties, relationships, aspirations and circumstances from one institution and stage of life to another.

That knowledge matters.

NPA believes the experience of parents and families should be recognised as an important form of evidence alongside professional expertise, academic research, administrative data and children's own voices.

So we want to turn the usual telescope around.

Instead of always beginning with institutions and looking towards families, we begin with children and families and look outwards towards the systems surrounding them.

Parent Experience Is Evidence

Government, schools, regulators and other organisations already ask parents questions.

That matters.

But there is an important difference between answering the questions institutions choose to ask and having independent infrastructure through which parents themselves can help identify the questions that need asking.

NPA intends to listen systematically and at scale.

Through surveys, polling, research, discussions and lived-experience evidence, we'll explore what families are experiencing, what is working, what isn't, where problems are emerging and what parents believe needs to change.

We won't assume parents all agree.

Agreement is evidence. Disagreement is evidence too.

Our role is to understand both — and bring what we learn into public debate, policymaking and our wider advocacy.

Not only asking parents what institutions want to know — helping identify what parents think institutions need to know.

Starting With Education

Education will be NPA's first major area of focus.

It is one of the most important influences on children's lives and futures — and one of the areas in which the relationship between families, institutions and government matters most.

But children don't live their lives in institutional silos.

Education can intersect with mental health, SEND, family finances, housing, employment, childcare, transport and many other aspects of family life.

As NPA develops, we want to follow the issues that matter to parents and carers across those boundaries.

Start with education. Prove the model. Expand deliberately.

Independent By Design. Parent-Led From The Start.

NPA isn't a government initiative, a political campaign or a single-issue organisation.

It has been created by parents and carers who believe families need something that has been missing: permanent, independent national infrastructure of their own.

Our starting point isn't government, politics or institutions.

It's children, parents, carers and families.

We want to work constructively with schools, professionals, researchers, charities, businesses, policymakers, government and political parties where doing so can benefit children and families.

But NPA will remain independent and non-party-political.

As our membership grows, parents and carers themselves should increasingly shape the questions we ask, the evidence we gather and the priorities we pursue.

Different Families. Different Experiences. Different Views.

NPA isn't being created to tell parents what to think.

Millions of families will inevitably disagree — sometimes profoundly — about education, parenting, public services and public policy.

That diversity should be a strength.

Our job is to create a place where parents and carers can participate constructively, where different experiences can be understood, where areas of agreement and disagreement can be identified honestly, and where evidence can improve the quality of debate.

You don't have to agree with every other parent to believe parents should have a meaningful part in the conversation.

A Huge National Resource — Hiding In Plain Sight

Parents and carers aren't simply users of services.

Among millions of parents are teachers, nurses, engineers, lawyers, researchers, carers, business owners, tradespeople, scientists, designers, volunteers, public servants — and people with every imaginable form of professional and lived experience.

And every parent brings something else: knowledge gained through raising a family.

NPA wants to harness that extraordinary resource.

By bringing together parents, carers, educators, experts and partner organisations from across society, we aim to strengthen family engagement, support better-informed policymaking and encourage healthier national conversations.

All focused on improving children's lives, opportunities and long-term futures — for families and for society as a whole.

Build It With Us

NPA is at the beginning.

And that is precisely why now is the time to get involved.

We're building NPA with parents and carers, not simply launching it at them.

Our Founding Community will help us understand what parents need, which issues matter most, what services would genuinely be useful and how parents want to participate.

You might have five minutes to answer a survey.

You might have an experience that could help us understand a problem.

You might have professional expertise to contribute.

You might want to volunteer.

Or you may simply want to know that somebody is building this — and hear what happens next.

Every level of involvement matters.
